CCI NewsGate

integrated editorial systems

The newsroom landscape is changing and the traditional editorial system, whilst a necessary component of the newsroom of the future, needs to be part of a totally integrated newsroom. To that end, CCI Europe has worked with industry leaders to develop the next generation of its editorial solution - CCI NewsGate.

CCI NewsGate is a new type of system: It is truly a content management system, although not in the traditional sense of Web content management systems. It is certainly an editorial front-end, yet nothing like yesteryear’s editorial front-ends that were mostly typewriters with databases. It has archive-like features, yet goes way beyond any traditional archive systems in richness of relationships and accessibility.

In short CCI NewsGate is a hybrid of an XML-based content management system that allows content to be created for, and easily reused in a number of products and media AND importantly, a complete environment for journalism, supporting the entire news process and all the tasks and information that go into it, including story and event planning, research and gathering, writing and editing, publication in multiple media and final archiving and later reuse.

With CCI NewsGate, CCI Europe deliberately chose a product strategy that is radically different from their traditional competitors, who have been busy trying to extend their editorial pagination systems into the online domain. This strategy enables CCI Europe to address a number of requirements at existing and new customers which could not have been addressed with a “galactic publishing system” for all media.

The result is an editorial system with a vastly expanded editorial environment, designed specifically around the journalistic process and the covering of news stories and with features to plan, create, manage and deliver content for any number of media.

Through CCI NewsGate, newsrooms can harness the journalistic resources of their organization to produce targeted content with significantly higher commercial potential than was previously possible. The content that is produced in the system is “born converged” and as such is adaptable to any distribution platform, new or old. Furthermore, the increase in the content’s flexibility also increases the potential for news organizations to increase the content’s customer focus.

CCI NewsGate enables newsrooms to create a setting of increased flexibility and mobility amongst news gatherers. Having more mobility in the newsroom, both geographically and departmentally, enables managers and editors to optimize staff allocation, while flexibility amongst journalists in relation to their functional roles on a given story, encourages collaboration in a convergent environment.

The news industry generally associates the term “re-use” with a news organization’s ability to maximize the return on the content throughout its lifecycle and at all points of the value chain. However, with CCI NewsGate the term “re-use” is taken to the next level as it refers to not only maximizing the use of content, but also to the use and re-use of research, information, people and knowledge in the newsroom and across properties in order to exploit every possible revenue opportunity.

Being able to generate higher quality content with increased commercial potential, while optimizing the use of journalistic resources for any given publication or newsroom undoubtedly provides a news organization with efficiency gains. CCI NewsGate extrapolates the benefits achieved by the individual newsroom and applies them to the entire enterprise.

CCI NewsGate is built on an integration architecture that is both open and scalable that can harness the valuable resources of even the smallest news organization. The open architecture enables CCI NewsGate to keep pace with the rapidly changing technology.

Recently, CCI Europe announced that CCI NewsGate will soon be expanded with pagination and production, which will function as a complete, integrated editorial/pagination solution using either CCI LayoutChamp/MS Word or Adobe InDesign/InCopy as design/editing applications.

Using the vast amount of experience and expertise garnered from the production environment and combining it with a vision of news in the future ensures that the inclusion of pagination in CCI NewsGate will provide publishers with a suitable solution for the news organization of the future.
